Borges: 5 golfers to watch at the Travelers this week

The PGA Tour arrives in New England this week for the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn. Here’s a look at some big names who could climb the leaderboard:

Bubba Watson

World ranking: 6

2015 Travelers finish: 1st

Skinny: Watson hasn’t played well since winning the Northern Trust Open and finishing second at WGC-Cadillac early in the season. He was never in it at any of the Majors this year or at the Players. Now he’s heading to Rio for the Olympics and could use a strong sendoff. The question is whether he has it in him after a dismal 1-over-par performance at the PGA that left him 15 shots back. No one knows, but he’s a two-time winner here because it’s a bomber’s paradise.

Patrick Reed

World ranking: 14

2015 finish: Missed cut

Skinny: Reed is one of three members of the U.S. Olympic golf team at the Travelers. This will be like watching the heats of an Olympic track or swim event for those headed to Rio. It’s a test of form. Reed was a little short last week when asked when he would live up to once saying he was a top-five player in the world. He isn’t and won’t be until he wins consistently. He has nine top-10 finishes this year but none since the Memorial and hasn’t truly been in the mix since losing the Valero Open in April when Charley Hoffman beat him with a nine-foot birdie putt on the final hole. Hoffman did not then declare himself top-5 in the world. If Reed still thinks he is, it’s time to win.

Matt Kuchar

World ranking: 20

2015 finish: DNP

Skinny: Kuchar is the third member of the U.S. Olympic team here so watching his form going into Rio is worth your time. Early this season he had an incredible stretch, finishing top-10 five times in six outings over a seven-week stretch. He needs to get back to that form to win a gold medal. The Travelers’ inviting track is a good layout to reignite his game.

Branden Grace

World ranking: 10

2015 finish: Missed cut

Skinny: This is Grace’s first full year on Tour and he’s making the best of it. He’s already won at the Heritage Classic and the Qatar Masters on the European Tour. He showed well last week at the PGA Championship, where he finished fourth with a 9-under 271 and a final-round 67. That comes on top of finishing tied for fifth at the U.S. Open, so he’s done well in some of the season’s biggest events. He is one of South Africa’s top three players who chose not to go to Rio so he’s over that controversy and playing free and easy with three top-10 finishes in his last four outings. His one slip was a T-72 in the British Open, but he’s ready to win again.

Daniel Summerhays

World ranking: 53

2015 finish: Missed cut

Skinny: This guy bears watching even though he’s never won on Tour. This is his 24th Tour event this year, and he has only two top-10 finishes, but they were at the U.S. Open (T-8) and last week at the PGA, where he finished third, four shots back of Jimmy Walker. The previous week he failed to make the cut at the Canadian Open. Who is this guy? Is he the struggling guy or the Major championship threat? Will this week at River Highlands be where he breaks through and wins for the first time? Why not?

THREE TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Keegan Bradley

World ranking: 111

2015 finish: T-39

Skinny: It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since he won the PGA Championship. He had three wins in his first two years on Tour but hasn’t won since 2012 and his world ranking is approaching the dangerous No. 125 cut-off point. His performance last week at the PGA is typical of what’s been happening. He had two rounds in the 60s and two, including the opening round, over par. He was 2-under for the tournament but never in contention. Of his 22 starts on Tour this year, the Vermont native and former high school champion from Hopkinton has missed the cut an incredible 50 percent of the time (11 of 22). Although he tied for eighth at the Memorial, one has to wonder where he’s headed. River Highlands fits his game if any course does.

Padraig Harrington

World ranking:

2015 finish: Missed cut

Skinny: One of the world’s most popular players because of his affable personality and three Major championships, the 44-year-old Harrington came out of nowhere to tie for sixth with two weekend rounds in the 60s at the PGA Championship. Prior to that he’d struggled this year, missing the cut four of his last six outings. So which Padraig is in Connecticut? The one for whom golf has become a long walk spoiled, as Mark Twain once called it, or the one who challenged over a tough weekend at the PGA and knows what it means to win a Major? Hard to say, but one thing is sure, he’ll be the friendliest guy in the place if you bump into him.

Bryson DeChambeau

World ranking: 159

2015 finish: DNP

Skinny: The 22-year-old, first-year pro is the guy in the Ben Hogan hat. Some experts think he may have a game to match, which is a mouthful. He is one of only five players to win both the NCAA Division 1 and U.S. Amateur championships in the same year. He turned pro after finishing tied for 21st at the Masters, thus losing his amateur exemption into the U.S. Open. No problem. He tied for fourth in his pro debut at the RBC Heritage Classic, then missed four straight cuts, but got into the Open on his merit and finished T-15. He signed a massive endorsement deal with Puma and is being projected as golf’s “next big thing” in the U.S. Has a unique swing and clubs. All his irons are the same length, 37.5 inches, and have the same bounce angle and lie. The only difference is the loft. That’s not the recommended way to play, but his uniqueness and style make him someone to watch. There have been a lot of next big things in golf, and few work out, but it’s always fun to watch the next one at the start of it all.

AND THE WINNER IS ...

Branden Grace

He seems poised to make noise. I think he’ll do it this week at the Travelers, although it’s a course where so many guys go low someone can get hot for four days and swamp the field. Grace is one of them.
